Having a chainsaw is extremely helpful as it can be used for cutting wood to make the home warm or for removing the branches and trees, but it also comes with some related risks. A chainsaw is extremely powerful and is sharp enough to cut a 12 inch log at very high speed. So, you can imagine how easily it can harm people around it also. It is a black truth that a large number of accidents take place every year because of the chainsaw but we forget that a majority of these accidents can be avoided because they usually take place only because the operators do not follow the safety warning that come with the chainsaw or they do not know how to operate a chainsaw properly. Here are some tips that you must follow while operating a chainsaw.

1. Choosing the right size of chainsaw for your job. It can be unsafe to use a chainsaw that is too big or too small for doing the job. For example, a 24 inch bar chainsaw should not be used to cut a 6 inch log. A big chainsaw can pass through the log at an extremely high speed, catch you and this may lead you to slip. In addition to that, using a chainsaw of too much power can also be harmful for the operator. So, if you have to use a chainsaw frequently and you are planning to purchase a chainsaw for yourself, then make sure that you are purchasing the one of the right size and power.

2. Do you wear protective clothes while operating a chainsaw? The next thing that you must take care of while operating a chainsaw is that you must be wearing proper protective clothes to keep your body safe. Some items that you must not forget are leather boots or those with the steel toes. Also try to wear ear plugs so that your ears do not get harmed due to the loud noise it makes and also wear safety glasses so that the flying debris does not get into your eyes.

3. Do you check the chainsaw before starting it? It is important to check the chainsaw before starting it. All the bolts should be tight, fluid levels should be sufficient and chain tension should be proper.

4. Starting the chainsaw properly. Most people find it easy to start the chainsaw holding it with one hand. But this is not a safe procedure to start it. You should place it on the ground and then only start it.

5. Carrying the chainsaw properly. While carrying the chainsaw over a rough terrain, make sure that it chain brake has been engaged or the chainsaw is completely shut off.

6. Do you know how to do the cutting properly? Never start cutting from the tip of chainsaw because the saw may kick back and you may get hurt. To avoid people from doing this, some chainsaw manufacturers also add a tip guard to their chainsaws.

7. Sharpening. In order for the chainsaw to work properly, it must always be sharp. You can either take it to a local store to have it sharpened, or purchase one of many different types of chainsaw sharpeners so that you can do it at home.

8. Holding The Chainsaw Properly. In order to operate the chainsaw safely, never use the chainsaw in a position higher than your chest. Also, never overreach. If you need to move into a different position, then move. Stretching will cause you to lose your balance and could result in a serious accident.

If you follow all these precautions while operating a chainsaw, you can take advantage of your chainsaw at its best and that too without hurting yourself. Therefore, you have to be always careful while using your chainsaw.
